The race is on to find the next Miss Earth Guam. Eighteen contestants are competing this year for the beauty pageant title, which promotes environmental awareness. The winner will go on to represent the island in the international pageant scheduled for October 28 in Indonesia, says Lita Duenas, pageant executive director.
On Monday, you can catch a glimpse of your favorite contestants in the swimsuit and costume preliminaries at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort.
"Expect all 18 contestants to walk the runway and be judged in their two-piece bikinis followed by their original national costumes," Duenas says.
"The contestants will be joined on stage by the Rasan Acho Latte Dance group where they will showcase a fusion of culture and fashion."
The Miss Earth Guam Organization was created out of the focus and determination to empower local youths and adults to take on environmental issues and projects, Duenas says.
"The cadre of young leaders and ambassadors' mission is to encourage our community, through promoting awareness on the importance of preservation, protection, and care for our environment," she says.
"The contestants have participated in several island events such as the KUAM CareForce cleanup, Earth Hour, Guam Special Olympics and Relay for Life, to name a few. The contestants will also be volunteering at the carnival with the i*recycle organization."
On June 26, the Miss Earth Guam Coronation will be held, also at the Sheraton, where Miss Earth Guam 2011, Anna Calvo, will be relinquishing her crown, Duenas says.
